PS Flood Barriers® In Action: Perelman Performing Arts Center

New York City, NY

Around the Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center, the flood-protection design includes passive flood barriers integrated into the building’s access points. One key component of that design is a series of Hydro1® Pedestrian Flood Doors and barriers placed at ground-level entry points. These are purposely designed flood doors that stay in place 24/7 and act as watertight barriers if floodwaters rise.

The Hydro1 units from PS Flood Barriers® don’t require manual deployment like temporary sandbags or removable panels. Instead, they function as regular doors under normal conditions, giving people and equipment easy access, yet they’re engineered to seal tightly against water pressure during a flood event. Their construction includes specialized perimeter gaskets that dramatically reduce leakage compared to repurposed or standard doors.

Because they are passive (always in place) and built to meet rigorous flood-code performance standards, Hydro1 doors help to protect the performing arts center’s lower levels and entrances from coastal storm surge or significant flood events while still allowing normal pedestrian use on a day-to-day basis.
